πŸ€” Homework #1 Should it be done?

πŸ“š Virtual synchronous activities for Business English and ESP (working title - looking for something snappier)

🎯 Who would read/use my material?
Teachers, trainers and materials writers who are producing Business English/ESP materials for courses that have sessions run on virtual synchronous platforms like Zoom, Adobe Connect etc.

🎯 Why? What would they gain from it?
They'd get ideas for making virtual instructor-led sessions more engaging and communicative. Organizations are increasingly moving away from face-to-face training and this book will help teachers and trainers become more confident about facilitating learning in virtual classrooms while ensuring that it's not all talk-talk-talk.

🎯 What are they currently using or reading instead?
A few use ideas they pick up in webinars or on courses like this one where they might see the facilitator demoing an activity. They might have read Nicky Hockly's Webinars: A Cookbook for Educators although activities comprise a small section of that book and they're not ESP-specific. They might also be reading books from the larger world of corporate training such as Jennifer Hofman's Live and Online (I doubt it though). Most teachers don't have a repository of virtual activities they can use as they would with classroom teaching so they end up making slides with some text and asking questions and getting answers in the chat. There's a definite need here.

🎯 Why do I think my material (or idea) is good?
This is specifically targeted at people who teach in-company and in ESP contexts where the push to offer virtual instructor-led training is strongest. One of my clients - a large corporation - has officially banned all classroom training. So I'm potentially publishing this ebook at the right time.

  1. This is a really interesting topic and it really appeals to me as a teacher who would like to make more effective use of virtual meeting rooms for education purposes as well as a way to help my students learn new and forward thinking presentation skills. Nice!

  4. I think Teaching Online would also be a good source for inspiration for this project. It sounds great! deltapublishing.co.uk - teaching_online | Delta Publishing

  5. Michael Harrison Thanks Michael - I don't have that book but I did take a look at it a couple of years ago. From what I recall, it mostly had asynchronous activities run on a Wiki or a course site. And the synchronous activities weren't explicitly for virtual classrooms - I could be wrong though. I'll try to track it down and have a look again.

  6. Adi Rajan I've got a copy at home. I'll take a look myself and let you know if anything sounds like it might be useful.
