Homework #1 Should it be done?

Homework #1 Should it be done?
"Student Success Guide" for Kangwon National University

•Who would read/use my material?
Students at my university who are enrolled in any of the courses taught by foreign faculty, specifically, though it could be helpful in general.

•Why? What would they gain from it?
They would have a reference document that could help them understand what is expected of them, and provide guidance and tips on how manage time, money, and coursework.

•What are they currently using or reading instead?
Nothing. Though they have a brief orientation period when they first enter the university, very little (none?) of this material is covered.

•Why do I think my material (or idea) is good?
Many of them lack general knowledge / training in how to thrive (or even cope) with the basics of life at university. This is, for most, their first time living away from home and having to be self-sufficient. Specifically, they are often confused or unaware of the (very) different expectations that foreign faculty may have regarding grading, communication, and what constitutes 'success'.

  1. I think this sounds like a great project. Very practical. I don't know if you've thought about a book cover yet, but one possibility might be a photo you've taken (or take for this purpose) of the university or the English department.

Your other option, of course, is to make it broader than just your university. But there's also no reason you couldn't eventually do both.

  2. This is such a good idea! One question - will your students be able to access all this information in English?

  3. Wilma Luth Hi Wilma! I would distribute the ebook via my website / google classroom / KakaoTalk messenger (the SMS everyone in Korea uses). Whether they'll understand it all in English.....that's another question.

  4. I'm curious about whether there are local resources available in Korean that share strategies for success in tertiary studies?

  5. Adi Rajan You would think there would be, but honestly I'm not sure. This would (possible / probably) duplicate some of that, but would be different in that it specifically address things to do with classes taught by non-Koreans. I'll have to look into that, though. Good question!

  6. Michael Free A couple of years ago, some teachers I was training showed me a book in an Indian language on how to study effectively. In fact I think it might have had an English title - Study Success or something like that. It prescribed some some pretty bizarre (from my POV) strategies such as drinking warm milk on an empty stomach and making offerings at a temple. So I think it might be worthwhile having a look at the local landscape and get a sense of how people perceive study skills.

  7. It all sounds very useful to any student, really!
