Homework #1

Homework #1
•Who would read/use my material?
Brave teachers, with permission from their schools and students of course, and advanced students (B2+) who wish to study on their own.

•Why? What would they gain from it?
They would gain and grasp the concept of swearing which can consist of anywhere between 3 to 14% of daily language. They could also learn to avoid dangerous situations and improve social relationships.

•What are they currently using or reading instead?
Various websites, English as a second f***ing Language books, media, peers

•Why do I think my material (or idea) is good?
There are some books, but I don't think they go very in depth. I’ll be adding etymology, the art of being a good swearer, and more pragmatic exercises.

  1. Ha! I love the description of "brave teachers." When I taught a class on movies and TV, I gave my students a guide to swearing--not to use, but so they could understand what they were hearing. They found it very useful. I think it's harder to swear in a foreign language even if you get the context exactly right--if I swear in French, people sometimes just laugh (because I have an accent, not because I used the word incorrectly). But it's so, so important to understand!

  2. Swim Finn, I find your idea amazing! I'm a very well behaved person myself and never swear, but as a person who loves whatever has to do with human attitude, psychology and behaviour, I believe it'd be very interesting. You see, we tend to be highly interested in language and culture but isn't swearing part of the culture, too? I strongly believe that the fact that you'll add etymology will be of interest among other fields of study, apart from teaching.

  3. Love this! I use cursing at times, but very carefully (which is not my nature!) Could be both excellent and popular! :)
[Didn't I see you in a leadership course with TESOL?]
