Thank you for all your comments on my first cover samples.

Thank you for all your comments on my first cover samples. I've taken your suggestions into consideration and here is round #2 :) I've played with fonts, letter colors, hashtags/no hashtags (no hashtags on most covers), header (stray stories) with first letters capitals / all capitals / no capitals (I don't really like Stray Stories with two capital letters S because of the bad connotation. For the same reason, for example, I don't like to refer to students as SS...), various options with my and my daughter's names. What do you think now?

P.S.
Enjoy the live session, guys! I wish I could join you, but 6 a.m. (Greek time) is really too difficult for me...

  1. Oh, nice. I think I like #3 best, with the blue subtitle and thicker font for the main title. I do prefer the capital letters for Stray Stories, but it's not a big deal. And I like the stars from the yellow one, but I'd want them blue. :) Also larger!

Question--do you want the cover to give away that Toby is a stray?

There's also a question of whether people will think it's the stories that are stray, not the animals. Stories of Strays? Are you planning more stories? Could this be Stories of Strays #1? If there's only going to be one story (ever, not just for this course), then I'd suggest deleting the series name, because it won't be a series.

  2. Dorothy Zemach There will be more stories in the series. In fact, I'm already writing the second one. I will make all the changes with colors, stars and letter sizes. Thank you for your suggestions and comments.
A very good point about giving away that Toby is a stray! Definitely something to reconsider!
Plus I was aware of the ambiguity with stray stories (whether the stories are stray or about strays), but I used the phrase anyway to check if anybody else, except for me, gets concerned. You did, so I'll come up with a different phrase. At some point I considered sth like "Super Dogs", but then I thought it sounded too much superherolike, whereas what I want to say is that every dog can be your hero, it doesn't have to wear a shining armor... Does it make sense?
Not sure about the number in the series title. I'm thinking about graded readers - publishers have different series with different series titles, but I've never seen numbers within the series. Is it OK if I don't number the stories in my series? Besides, I don't want to suggest that the stories have to be read in a specific order...

  3. Ditto - number 3, with small “s” (and without numbering).
It didn’t cross my mind that the story might be stray, but maybe I know too well what Margarita’s passion is!

  4. This is such a lovely concept :) I agree with the above, the bold red with 'Stray Stories' in blue and the two circles really stands out.

  5. Dorothy Zemach, Kate Cory-Wright and all, how about Stray Tails instead of Stray Stories? Would it be clearer and maybe cuter, too?

  6. Barbi Bujtas I was actually playing with the two words. Should I make it more specific by including both tails and tales in the series title?

  7. Margarita Kosior I like Tales, because it does remind people of Tails. But I'd use the correct one for the title and let the pun be implied.

  8. Margarita Kosior I actually still would prefer Tales of Strays, if you will have several books, or nothing at all if it is only one book. But either way is fine, really, so I'd call this "author's choice." :)

  9. Dorothy Zemach tales of strays rhymes, so it makes lots of sense :) Thank you!

  10. Tales is a lovely alteration. Nice one!
